Midland and Ector County Bar Associations Honor Judge Counts with gift to Judge Lucius Bunton Memorial Law Scholarship Fund

Permian Basin Area Foundation received a generous donation from the Midland and Ector County Bar Associations for the Judge Lucius Bunton Memorial Law Scholarship Fund in honor of Judge David Counts, who was recently sworn in as U.S. District Judge for Western District of Texas. The donation came about following Judge Counts’ recent investiture ceremony in September.

Judge Counts is a native of Knox City, Texas and was a state and federal prosecutor for much of his first 23 years of law practice in Austin and San Antonio. He was appointed in July 2009 to serve as U.S. Magistrate Judge for the Midland/Odessa Division of the Western District of Texas. Judge Counts was then appointed as U.S. District Judge to preside over the Midland/Odessa and Pecos Divisions in January 2018.

In 2001, friends and family of the late Senior U.S. District Judge Lucius Bunton created the Judge Lucius Bunton Memorial Law Scholarship Fund in his memory. Judge Bunton served as a federal judge from 1979 until his death in early 2001. The fund provides scholarships to West Texas students pursuing a degree in law. The most recent recipients are attending the University of Texas at Austin and Harvard Law School.
